North Carolina requires a substance use assessment from a state-approved provider for anyone convicted of Driving While Impaired (DWI). The assessment determines whether you'll be referred to ADETS (Alcohol and Drug Education Traffic School) or to a longer substance use treatment program based on your history and screening results. Both results are reported to the court and to the NC DMV as part of your license restoration process.

What To Bring
Photo ID, a copy of your driving record (DMV Form DL-123 if available), your citation or court paperwork, and insurance card. Please arrive sober — an assessment cannot be completed if you appear impaired.
The Interview
A 60–90 minute confidential session covering your alcohol and drug history, the incident, prior treatment, and mental health. We also complete the required screening instruments.
The Recommendation
You'll receive a written recommendation for ADETS (education) or a treatment level (SAIOP or SACOT). We explain what each option involves and how it satisfies court and DMV requirements.
Court & DMV Paperwork
We provide the signed assessment report and, once ADETS or treatment is completed, the completion documentation the DMV needs for license restoration.

Do I need a DWI assessment in North Carolina?
Yes. Under NC General Statute § 20-17.6, anyone convicted of DWI must complete a substance use assessment from a state-approved provider before their license can be restored. Many attorneys also recommend completing the assessment before sentencing.
What's the difference between ADETS and treatment?
ADETS (Alcohol and Drug Education Traffic School) is a short educational program recommended for lower-risk results. If your history and screening scores indicate a higher level of need, the recommendation will be for treatment — typically SAIOP (ASAM Level 2.1) or SACOT (ASAM Level 2.3).

Can I complete my DWI assessment by telehealth?
Yes. We offer secure video assessments to residents in all 100 NC counties. You'll need a private space, a working camera, photo ID, and your driving record and court paperwork available.
What should I bring to my appointment?
